On 20 July 2012 the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rakhmon received the Energy Charter Secretary General Urban Rusnák. During their meeting, President Rakhmon stated that Tajikistan was looking to develop its enormous energy potential while respecting the interests of all Central Asian states. In order to achieve this goal, Tajikistan was interested in developing cooperation with all countries and with international organisations, such as the Energy Charter, where it became a member in 1997.

Secretary General Rusnák confirmed the Charter's interest and readiness to develop further the organisation's relations with Tajikistan. He stated that the Energy Charter welcomed Tajikistan's intentions and that it would provide support in order for the country to achieve energy security and sustainability.

Over the course of 19-20 July, the Secretary General also held meetings with several high-level officials from the Tajik government. In their discussions with Mr. Sherali Gul, Minister of Energy and Industry, the parties looked at the possibilities of enhancing the cooperation between the Charter and Tajikistan. During the Secretary General's meeting with Mr. Makhmoudjon Sobirov, First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, they covered a wide range of energy cooperation issues and discussed the prospects of energy cooperation in the region, including with Afghanistan and Pakistan. Mr. Sobirov highlighted the importance of diversifying Tajikistan's energy supply sources and the great potential of renewables in meeting the country's energy needs and in its sustainable development.
