Ministers, Deputy Ministers, ambassadors and government officials of the fifty four members and thirty five observers to the Energy Charter Conference gathered in Nicosia, Cyprus, on 5 December 2013 to discuss '15 Years of Energy Investment Promotion and Protection under the Energy Charter Treaty.' This ministerial conference took place the day before the 24th Meeting of the Energy Charter Conference.
The Director of the Energy Charter Secretariat, Mr. Steivan Defilla, launched the discussion on how to best promote energy investments and how to increase transparency in investment dispute settlement in relation to recent trends such as the regionalisation of international investment agreements.
Secretary General Rusnák held a series of meetings with ministers of countries from the region of Middle East and North Africa in the margins of the Ministerial Meeting of the Union for the Mediterranean in Brussels on 11 December 2013. The MENA region is specifically targeted by the Energy Charter's expansion and outreach policy.
6 December 2013, Nicosia, Cyprus – At its Meeting today the Energy Charter Conference approved a new system of chairmanship of the organisation designed to encourage the member countries' political ownership of the Charter Process. From 2014 individual countries will chair the Conference on an annual basis.
Kazakhstan will be the first country to assume this important role from 1 January 2014. Recognising the challenges lying ahead and the opportunities arising from the ongoing modernisation processes within the Charter, Kazakhstan is looking forward to leading the Charter in the coming year.
